One of the serious social issues of our time is homelessness in America. Many of the homeless in our communities suffer from alcohol and substance abuse. Others have other serious medical problems or mental health issues. Most homeless people do not have health care insurance.

One medical issue that most of us do not face, but the homeless do, is hypothermia, especially during the winter. Homeless people also suffer from untreated kidney and heart disease. They are more likely to die from these illnesses than the general population. The average life expectancy for this group is only about 45 years of age. The overall population life expectancy is 78 years in the U.S.

There is one program called the Health Care for the Homeless, that is federally funded, to provide medical care for persons who are homeless. This program also offers dental care, supportive services, and some types of housing. More programs like this one are needed to address all the medical requirements of the homeless living on the streets in our towns and cities.

I am so happy that Christmas is coming. Thanksgiving is a few days away, but I am already getting out the Christmas decorations. As soon as Thanksgiving is over we are going to go all out with them. We have lights to put up and a whole house to decorate. I have that happy feeling that I get around Christmas and I just can’t shake it. One thing that I absolutely love to do is buy holiday candy.
