What is PRK Recovery ?

PRK is the abbreviated form of Photo refractive keratectomy a quite common procedure of surgery to rectify hyperobia (far sightedness) and Myopia (short sightedness) and also Astigmatism (cross eyed vision). It is a short surgery requiring just minutes and is usually done by the use of laser. While the surgery itself is over in minutes the process of recovery takes much longer sometimes requiring three to six months to attain clear stable vision. The after surgery care is an important process of recovery for PRK. For the first 3-5 hours you may want to keep your eyes completely closed. Without the natural protective epithelium barrier (It takes about two to three days to grow back) one needs to wear protective eye equipment either in the form of contact lenses or eye dressing and is an out-patient process.

In about 2-3 days after the prk recovery there will be some irritation and burning sensations which might cause discomfort. Natural remedies as ice packs and prescription eye drops will ease these discomforts considerably. Avoid rubbing your eyes at all costs as this will either prevent or disrupt the epithelial development. You will have to abstain from strenuous physical or eye activity for the next 4-6 months.
